During his ten years in the field of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning design, Tom has benefited from the opportunity to work in a variety of market sectors, supporting both private and federal clients. His experiences include design and management for projects ranging from medical office buildings to lodging facilities to high-performance, variable-volume research laboratories. Tom has extensive experience in the design of central energy plants, including both chiller plants (water-cooled and air-cooled) and boiler plants (hot water and steam). Energy efficiency and sustainable design has been a primary focus of Tom’s work and he has designed facilities to meet the requirements of various levels of LEED certification.
As a prerequisite for LEED certification, the prevalence of comprehensive building Commissioning has increased appreciably within the last decade. Commissioning allows the owner to rest assured that a facility will operate as designed and in the most efficient and economical means, while still meeting the standards of performance outlined from project inception. Tom has provided and witnessed the benefits of Commissioning from first hand experience as the Commissioning Provider for several high profile facilities, most notably the Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA.
A native Charlottean, Derek has worked for select engineering firms in North Carolina and California. He founded Refresco in early 2007 to focus efforts on sustainability and energy efficiency. Extensive project management experience has broadened his understanding of how systems interrelate. This background has helped to execute a holistic design and planning philosophy that consistently satisfies or exceeds the complex visions of building owners and developers.
In various capacities on both coasts, he has successfully managed and designed mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for projects of all sizes, including district energy plants. Sectors of work include commercial, municipal, institutional and multifamily residential. He has designed systems and performed economic analysis for multiple LEED certified projects, including many ‘firsts’ in North and South Carolina.
Derek has served on the Board of Governors of the Southern Piedmont Chapter of ASHRAE, and is currently Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Region Chapter of the US Green Building Council.
